REACH

The REACH legislation (EC 1907/2007) came into force on June 1, 2007. The aim of REACH is to improve the protection of human health and the environment through better and earlier identification of the intrinsic properties of chemical substances.

Total Petrochemicals is fully committed to supporting this objective and to making a positive contribution to the sustainable development of the European Chemical Industry. Total Petrochemicals is also committed to maintaining and developing its business through the implementation of the regulation.
Total Petrochemicals is fully aware of all the requirements that REACH involves and has engaged the necessary human and financial resources to fulfil its responsibilities and realise its objectives.
For any questions about the REACH regulation, please use the ECHA FAQ website.

REACH FAQ

What is in place to tackle the REACH implementation within Total Petrochemicals?
Total Petrochemicals has launched a project team dedicated to the implementation of REACH since early 2005 and composed of representatives from all sectors within the organisation. This team identified financial, IT and human resources, assessed business impact and opportunities, and orchestrated the (pre)-registration work. Experts from this team are also members of professional or scientific organisations (e.g. CEFIC, ECETOC, PlasticsEurope) and various task forces that contribute globally to the implementation of REACH.

Has Total Petrochemicals completely inventoried the substances involved in the business?
A full inventory of all our substances and preparations has been compiled. For each substance, we have confirmed its tonnage band, its place in our business, and our role as a manufacturer and/or importer and/or downstream user. As a manufacturer/importer, we have identified all our legal entities as described in REACH.

Do you understand your suppliers’ intention regarding REACH?
As a downstream user, we have been contacting all our suppliers since mid-2007 regarding:
(i) their REACH representative contact details, and
(ii) their intentions on the pre-registration and registration of the supplied substances.

How does Total Petrochemicals communicate about the pre-registration and registration strategy?
Following CEFIC recommendations, Total Petrochemicals is using standard questionnaires that are intended to provide relevant information by keeping its business data confidential.
Please find below the link to the questionnaires concerning pre-registration and registration of our products in polymers and base chemicals.

What about the pre-registration process for substances that Total Petrochemicals manufactures and imports?
The substances ready for pre-registration have all been successfully loaded into REACH-IT. We confirm our customers via our website that all the pre-registrations have been completed.

What about pre-registration for polymers that Total Petrochemicals manufactures in Europe and imports?
Polymers are preparations for which we are downstream users of many substances used in raw materials. We are working closely with our suppliers to ensure pre-registration of the substances that we purchase and import into the European Union. We are very confident of retaining the business for our polymers without any disruption .

Are my uses of your products taken into account by Total Petrochemicals?
Total Petrochemicals anticipates that the majority of substances in its portfolio will be registered for a range of typical downstream uses. We are following the principles of professional (trade) associations such as CEFIC and PlasticsEurope that are currently defining a generic approach for the establishment of categories of use and exposure scenarios. This is based on the guidance issued by the European Chemical Agency that deals with ways of exchanging data throughout the supply chain. We will be able to provide this information as soon as these categories have been defined.

Are you aware of GHS (Global Harmonization System)?
We know that the European Union will move to a new classification and labeling system, which will be based on the United Nations Global Harmonization System, also called GHS. As soon as the GHS is published in Europe, we will update our Safety Data Sheets accordingly and they will be made available to our customers no later that the GHS effective date.
